10 Motif Analysis The term motif is used for a theological idea or theme which permeates an author’s presentation. A motif is different from a word in that, whereas a word is restricted to one lexical unit, a motif encompasses associated words. Many have mistakenly identified the two and have done a motif analysis by means of a word study (e. g. investigating only ἀκολουθέω when actually intending to discover Matthew’s motif of discipleship).
